In the UK, it is difficult for members of the general public to determine the level of radiation for a particular location !. Government and government agencies tend to be express the levels in terms of what is deemed as acceptable !. Numbers are rarely if ever given !.
A reason for this may be, that large scale nuclear developed under the Military umbrella, and as such may be part of the Military-Industrial Complex !. Security concerns, appear to extend from this, and modern concerns about terrorism may have reinforced the tendency to keep things under wraps !.
It is hard for some of us to understand, how knowledge of radiation levels, can be seen as a risk ?. If anything ignorance of this subject, can contribute to public discomfort, and could in situations of stress, lead to Panic reactions !.
The constraints outlined above appear to be underwritten by UK government legislation and laws. These positions which were establish long before "Commercial Nuclear Power" matured to its modern day scale !.
In a time when nuclear installations were located in remote regions of the country !. On an industrial scale far smaller than today!. Appears to make certain assumptions !.An element of which, appears to be that nuclear contaminants, is expected to be contained at recognised registered nuclear sites, and is not expected to pass beyond the outer boundaries of such sites !.
Nuclear contamination, beyond a nuclear site is something which appears to demand attention ?. Given that the contamination requires instruments to detect it, and given that the experience at both Chernobyl, and Fukushima, shows that contamination can occur in "Hot Spots" !. The the current arrangements, as far as they exist, appear to be wholly inadequate !
