We are now into the second year of the emerging events at Fukushima, which began on March 11th. 2011. From a situation where there appeared to be, no significant problems, of a long term nature. A gradual unfolding of serious issues have been revealed !. The most disturbing of which is the uncertainty surrounding Known’s, Unknown’s, and Knowns which are not Known !.
Now in April 2012, the situation at Danini (TEPCO no.2.), is still shrouded in a haze of uncertainty, where one of its four reactors is suspected of having had a melt-out !. While at Daiichi( TEPCO no.1.) [Which is located some 7 miles north of Daiichi.]. Four of its six reactors are believed to be experiencing serious ongoing problems !. With the six spent-Fuel Pools, which reach a height above ground of around 60 meters, and of which some, if not all may have been damaged by hydrogen explosions, caused by the oxidation of the nuclear fuel, which can oxidizes when exposed to air, and produce hydrogen gas as a result !. The damaged buildings appear to present a problem of access, and at the same time a possible ignition source !. No 3 [Though some reports have said no 4 reactor.] reactor was it is said fueled with MOX (Mixed Oxide Fuel.) With I understand an undetermined consistency [As reports vary.] of Uranium and Plutonium, This reactor is understood to have been in its refueling cycle on March 11th 2011, and its Fresh Fuel was in its Spent Fuel Pool !. A pool which some reports say was originally designed to hold a third less fuel than it is, a present ?. Pool 3 has been reported as having a part of its refueling machine (This part is said to weigh 35 tonnes.) resting on top of its fuel racks, which would be expected to be under twenty foot of water !. It is believed this came about as a result of an earlier explosion !. This will of course complicate the removal of the fuel rods !.
Spent uranium is said by some, to be three times more radioactive than depleted uranium !. Depleted uranium being regarded as not-significantly radioactive !.There is according to some reports 1200 tonnes of Nuclear Fuel rods at Daiichi !.
The reports I read from Japanese people and those who can interpret Japanese, indicates a serious distrust of what “the powers that be” are telling them. TEPCO in particular, appears to be viewed with great suspicion !
There is said to be a seventh spent-fuel store, known as the common fuel-store !. This is said to be located at ground level !.
The Mox reactor spent-fuel pool, is a particular cause for concern, as it appears to have the potential to be a primer for a full scale nuclear explosion !. The most likely outcome though, appears to be a conventional explosion, which would likely spread more radiation across Japan !. The effect of this could be to raise the radiation level above 19 microsieverts per hour !. Resulting in a requirement for further evacuations !. In this case this could include the need to evacuate Tokyo !. What may cause this and when it may occur, can only be speculated about !. As there appears to be a number of possible sources !. A key solution to this possibility, could be the removal of the Fuel-rods, from the Mox reactor Spent-fuel store !.
